The Rolex reference 16013 is a vintage Datejust that was in production from 1977 to the late 1988's. The major distinction between this reference and it's predecessor is the engine. This watch is powered by the Rolex Calibre 3035, an automatic movement that beats at 28,800 vph. Among watch repair circles, this movement is know to be a die-hard, bullet-proof calibre, that has a low failure rate, and is very easy to maintain. It's not uncommon for us to come across watches with this movement that were never serviced and are still keeping time to within COSC specs. Besides the movement, this reference kept the classic case size and lines of datejusts of that era.

 

The Rolex reference 16013 possesses distinct features that set it apart from other Rolex watches. Its notable attribute is the captivating combination of a stainless steel case and an 18k yellow gold fluted bezel, exuding a unique blend of sophistication and resilience. Watch was worn very sparingly and is in overall excellent condition, with only minor wear on the case and bracelet. I would rate the watch as a 9/10 overall, see picutres. Movement is running strong, keeping excellent time with no mechanical issues. The band has some light stretch from normal use. Comes with box and manuals only.

WHY THIS WATCH 

 

The Rolex Datejust 16220 was introduced in 1989, replacing the reference 16030 which had been the flagship datejust since the late 1970s. The Datejust represents the spirit of the Rolex by treading that fine line between an all-out dress piece and something robust and versatile enough to be worn everyday. With it's quickset date function, sapphire cyrstal and bulletproof 3135 movement, the ref. 16220 is the perfect compromise for those who appreciate the looks of vintage Rolex but who want all the reassurance and convenience of modern-day engineering.

THE LITTLE DETAILS

 

This is a one owner watch that was very well maintained by it's owner, with all services being done at Rolex. Serial number is LXXXXX making this a 1989 watch. The watch was purchased from an authorized Rolex Dealer. The watch was fully serviced in 2004 and in 2021 by Rolex. Followng the 2021 service, the watch was worn only a handful of times thereafter, so the case and bracelet are in Near Mint condition, with only very light marks, around 90-93%. The watch comes with all that you see in the pictutres, including original box (with wear), manuals, Rolex Service Card from 2021, and Rolex service receipt from 2004.

WHY THIS WATCH

The Rolex Explorer was Rolex’s first sports watch, when it got introduced way back in 1953. This watch was marketed and produced to be a rugged adventure watch. This particular model, the 214270, was introduced at Basel-World in 2010. This was a major release as Rolex made some very big changes to the Explorer. Rolex upped the case size to 39mm, introduced the solid-link 904L steel bracelet, and updated the movement with the introduction of the Calibre 3132 movement.
 
The watch was very controversial when it was released for a few reasons. First, not everyone was happy with upgraded size to 39mm. Additionally, there was the lack of lume on the 3, 6, and 9 markers. For some reason Rolex decided to replace the lume filled markers with solid white gold markers instead. Many found this to be unacceptable as this is a sports watch after all, and lume is a must. Additionally, the Mercedes hands seemed too short for the dial of the now larger 39mm case. This dial configuration was to be called the Mark 1 dial (or Mark I, or “Blackout”), and is now considered the less desirable version of the 39mm explorer.
 
In 2016, Rolex actually listened to collectors and made some revisions to the 39mm explorer. The hands were widened and lengthened to match the profile the new bigger dial. Most importantly, Rolex brought back the lume-filled indices at 3,6, and 9. This dial configuration is called the Mark 2 (or Mark ii) dial and is considered the more desirable dial configuration.

The watch is in Near Mint condition, with minor wear that was difficult to photograph, mostly on the deployment clasp, overall around 93-95%.

WHY THIS WATCH

A very interesting 9c solid gold vintage Rolex from 1938. This watch has a gorgeous manual winding Rolex movement and a solid gold case. The blued hands contrast very nicely against the white dial, which is in fantastic condition for it's age. 

This watch measures 35.6 corner to corner and 31mm top to bottom. This watch fits similar to a 36mm watch in our opinion.
